Aberfan Cemetery – Aberfan Disaster Memorials

This restoration and refurbishment project was carried out on the Aberfan Cemetery and Memorial Garden. Our Summers stone masons assisted with the project which involved making improvements to the walling, steps and utility buildings. It took two years to complete, and was funded by the Welsh Government.

The memorial garden sits on the former site of Pantlas Junior School, which was destroyed in 1966 following the Aberfan disaster where a colliery spoil tip slid down the mountainside. The incident resulted in the deaths of 116 children and 28 adults; leading to a change in legislation regarding public safety in mines and quarries. The catastrophic disaster had a huge emotional impact across the whole of Wales and beyond, with people travelling from miles away to visit the garden and cemetery to pay their respects even today.
